JOIN THE CHOIR

SING WITH US

We’re thrilled you’re looking into joining other passionate choristers at the ORYC!

We have a really good mix of returning and new members this season; but we also continue to welcome new members at any time as we move forward.  We are always open to welcoming new members who are interested in the challenge of the unique ORYC experience. You can join us at any time!

REHEARSALS

To give you an idea of the commitment involved, rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish (174 Wilbrod). Rehearsals begin the first Tuesday after Labour day each year and usually run through to the beginning of July but the last rehearsal date is based on performance commitments.  Extra dress rehearsals are also held for each concert, typically scheduled one or two days prior to the concert date.

VOICE PLACEMENT

In an effort to make our choir more accessible, we are no longer requiring an audition to be part of the choir. We just ask that you fill out the contact form so that we can get to know you a little better, and contact you about coming to your first rehearsal! Before your first rehearsal, we will do a voice placement so that we can determine where your voice fits best in the choir. There is no need to prepare anything for the voice placement.

FAQs

Rehearsals take place weekly on Tuesday evenings near uOttawa campus. When you register or get in touch with our General Manager, we can inform you more.

Dress rehearsals, concerts, and special events are held on different dates and times. You will be notified of these in advance

Choir fees for the 2023-2024 season are $700. This covers rehearsals, communications with our team, practice tracks and guidance, and other rehearsal help. It also covers your participation in our special events, such as dress rehearsals, contracted events, performances, and weekend retreats.

We understand it is a large chunk to pay at once! We regularly offer split payment, in September and January, to all choristers. If you need to pay quarterly or monthly, please inquire with our General Manager directly (info@oryc.ca) to create a specialized plan. We will be glad to assist!

If this still proves too much, we have an application for the Inclusion Fund to help offset registration and ancillary costs. If the cost of joining is a barrier for you, please enquire with our General Manager for the confidential application form.

At the start, all you really need is a desire to sing and some musical knowledge, or a very strong will to learn. Later on, you will need a black folder for music (you can buy a choral folder through us), a black outfit for performances, a pencil for rehearsal and practice, and any other devices that will help you to learn the music. At minimum that would include a phone/iPad piano app and YouTube for practice tracks/links.

Sheet music will be provided to you on loan.
